You can join the PTA at any time (online signup here). We do a membership drive at our Open House that occurs sometime in the week before the first day of school and during Bring Your Parents to School Night in September. To join, you will fill out a simple form. PTA fees are $5.00 per person, the large majority of which is used to pay our dues to the NC PTA.
As a member of the PTA, you are eligible to run for a board position, vote for officers, and approve the yearly budget. Your dues will support the National PTA, NC PTA, and the Hope Valley PTA.
The main goal of our PTA is to support teachers and students throughout the school year. The bulk of our income is used for school supplies and arts programs for our students, which, along with self-supporting programs like Family Marathon, Family Fun Fest, Book Fairs, Field Day, and Odyssey of the Mind, help to supplement the academic mission of Hope Valley Elementary School and provide a little fun as well!
Each teacher is eligible for a PTA-sponsored $100 reimbursement for classroom supplies that they personally purchase. The PTA supplements other classroom supplies for teachers who don’t seek reimbursement.
The PTA allocates money for the Creative Arts in Public Schools (CAPS) program. CAPS is a partnership between the Durham Arts Council and Durham Public Schools to support integrating arts into the curriculum. Teachers pick programs that compliment what they are teaching. Programs are chosen by each grade level; for example, when third grade students were working on a poetry unit, the group Poetry Alive! performed for students and conducted an in-class poetry workshop.
This year, the PTA will collect items fro children in need at our monthly Spirit Nights.
Do I need to be a dues-paying member to volunteer at Hope Valley Elementary PTA events or to receive the Hope Valley PTA e-newsletter?
No! You are always welcomed and encouraged to volunteer at any PTA event. To subscribe to our newsletter, sign up on the form to the right, or send a request to firstname.lastname@example.org and you will be added to our mailing list.
The best way to stay informed about upcoming PTA events is to subscribe to our weekly e-newsletter. To receive this newsletter, submit the sign-up form to the right or send an e-mail to email@example.com. Also, the PTA generally sends home flyers to announce upcoming events. Make sure you check your child’s folder for these important announcements! You can also attend PTA meetings (see Calendar).
You can support the PTA both by donating funds to support our mission and by donating your time.
There will be a variety of fundraisers throughout the year – please donate whatever you can – every penny counts. The funds raised annually are used to pay for PTA activities in that year. The budget is set to the fundraising goal so whatever we raise is what will be available to spend to support teachers and students in a given school year.
There will also be several opportunities to volunteer for PTA events throughout the year. Typically, these requests are made through the PTA e-newsletter and include links to online sign-up tools. Please sign up to help if you can. It is a great way to meet other parents and become more involved in the school. There are day-time and evening opportunities and the shifts are typically an hour or less.
The PTA Board meets each month. All are welcome, however, these meetings will be focused on the organization of events and activities rather than the distribution of information. School-wide PTA meetings are held quarterly. The 2016-2017 meetings are scheduled for October 27th, January 19th, and March 23th.
